This is an exquisite small double-ended scent bottle of cylindrical form, with screw-off and push button rounded ends, made by the well-known London silversmith, Thomas Johnson, in 1880. He had his first mark registered in 1850 at 10 Dyers Building in Holborn, London. The business was transferred to Sampson Mordan & Co Ltd in 1898. The scent bottle was retailed by Thornhill & Co. (marked on the underside).
The silver presents TJ, the Lion passant, the London assay mark, and date letter “E” for 1880.
Victorian Silver & Glass Double-Ended Scent Bottle, by Thomas Johnson, London 18
The scent bottle is in very good antique condition with no damage or repair, with some wear to silver commensurate with age. Both ends are fully marked. There is some wear to the maker’s marks on one end. The tops work perfectly, with a strong hinge and clean button action.
