This is a very elegant Victorian silver caddy spoon with neo-classical borders and a rare engraving of a squirrel sitting on a brand filled with flowers and foliage. Its quality is revealed by a heavier weight than many of the earlier Georgian examples. It was made by John Aldwinckle and Thomas Slater in 1888. The firm traces back to 1838 and the silversmith Henry Holland. Upon his retirement in 1880, his son, Henry Holland Junior, enters a partnership with Aldwinckle and Slater, becoming what was known as Holland, Aldwinckle and Slater. The firm operated until 1932.
The silver caddy presents JA over TS, the Lion passant, the London assay mark, and date letter “N” for 1888.
